We dined at the Y Garth restaurant while visiting family at the Macdonald Plas Talgarth Health & Leisure Club site near Machynlleth and I’ll be honest, I didn’t have high hopes. I’m have a habit of judging a book by it’s cover and had glanced a few of the dishes available on the menu downstairs while we were having drinks earlier in the day and thought it was going to be deep fried everything (possibly or possibly not in a basket).
I was very wrong. The menu (available in the bar downstairs or the restaurant upstairs) was extensive and contained lots of local produce. I opted for the potato skins to start (which were a little tough going for someone wearing a brace, my own fault, should have thought it through….although it would have been nice if they’d left a little bit of potato in the skins!), which were tasty if not a little tough going, and the mushroom and vegetable lasagne (I’d have made it a little bit more tomatoey, but that’s just me), which was served with a huge heap of good salad and some garlic bread.
Everyone else’s choices went down really well, with the herring starter being the star.
The Sauvigon Blanc was a good one and their own Y Garth ale is definitely worth trying for the real ale fans among you.
The upstairs restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful.
6 adults and a child ate in total (5 starters, 7 mains) and the bill including drinks came to £130.
Booking essential in high season and on weekends.
