Here’s what you might want to know
Type: Modern brasserie / steakhouse
Location: Soho, London
Occasion: Thursday night dinner, pre-theatre
Spend: £19 for two courses / £23 for three (pre-theatre menu)
Verdict: Solid, reliable, good value — nothing mind-blowing, but that’s not a criticism
Why we went
This was Plan B after Blacklock Chop House was fully booked. One of us had a hankering for steak, and Sophie’s bills itself as a steakhouse, so expectations were cautiously optimistic.
The menu
We weren’t especially taken by the main steak menu on first glance. That said, had we known about the firepit options before ordering, we might have been tempted to go in a different direction.
Instead, we opted for the pre-theatre menu, which is genuinely good value:
- £19 for two courses
- £23 for three courses
We had:
- Crudité and humus
- Mackerel pâté
- Minute steak and salad (horseradish cream sauce was excellent)
- Moules frites (nom, nom, fries)
- Crème brûlée
Food-wise, it was really solid. Tasty, well-cooked, and satisfying. Not trying to be clever, not aiming for fireworks — just doing what it says on the tin, and doing it well. For the price point, that feels fair.
A small niggle: the moules could have done with a finger bowl and a separate bowl for empty shells. A minor quibble, but it was noticeable.
Drinks
I have a personal glass ceiling when it comes to wine. A reasonable bottle, for me, tops out at £25. Once menus start nudging past that, I get nervous in terms of quality, expectation and overall value. The house white was OK at £27/bottle (I wouldn’t choose it again though).
They also do 10oz cocktails. I don’t actually know what that means, but I’m assuming it translates as “huge”!
Service & atmosphere
Service was attentive, friendly, and quick — clearly geared towards getting you fed and out in time for your performance, without making you feel rushed.
The atmosphere was bustling, a little boho, lively without tipping into chaos. It felt like a place that knows its audience and plays to it confidently.

Vibe: Bustling Soho brasserie, relaxed but efficient
Would I go again? Yes — especially pre-theatre
Good / Bad / Meh:
Good:
- Excellent value pre-theatre menu
- Consistently tasty food
- Friendly, efficient service
- Lively atmosphere
Bad:
- Moules missing the practical extras (finger bowl, shell bowl)
Meh:
- Nothing standout or memorable — but sometimes “solid” is exactly what you want

Final word
I kept coming back to the word solid when thinking about this meal — and I mean that positively. Sophie’s isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s dependable, well-priced, and well-run. For a Thursday night in Soho, that’s no small thing.
