So I finally got around to seeing what all the fuss was about at #SkinnysHealth, Wrexham.

I’ll start off by saying my small falafel box and sunshine smoothie was absolutely delicious and I applaud the ethos, and the bravery, of launching the concept in the centre of Wrexham, which might not be the obvious place to launch such a venture.

However, whilst their food is all about good energy, I certainly didn’t feel that while I was in the café. No music and two sullen staff transferred their down beat attitude to the other customers in the shop.

I think part of the issue was the expectation they set with the presentation of the food. Give me food in a brown box and my mind set is ‘inexpensive, fast turnaround takeaway’. Charge me £10 for a meal and not mention it’s going to take 15 minutes to prepare and I’m starting to feel annoyed.

If it had been presented on a plate, my mind set would have skipped to ‘wow, what a great value meal’. A simple ‘all our food is freshly prepared from scratch for each customer so your meal will be 10-15 minutes’ delivered with a smile would have left me appreciating the value and the time being taken to prepare my meal.

After initially nearly needing some sort of revival smoothie to bring me around from the shock of the price (my fault for not spotting the sweet potato fry premium of £1.50), I even managed to reason that it is actually about the money when you consider Starbuck’s is charging £6 for mass produced salad boxes.

So Skinny Health, I dearly hope you succeed because the ‘high street’ needs better choices when it comes to good nutrition but please, finish the job you’ve started and deliver good energy to your customers on all fronts!
