I was privileged today to see one of the last flights of the Vulcan Bomber as it flew over the shores of the North Wales Coast at today’s airshow.
The Vulcan is now beyond it’s flying hours and is being retired this year. The aim is to keep it in fast taxi condition going forward, but the public won’t hear it’s infamous roaring engines again.
The huge crowds were rewarded by glorious weather and some amazing displays from all types of aircraft including giro-copters and bi-planes with some unbelievable aerobatics from the display flyers.
It was my first time at the event (which is now in its 7th year) and I was surprised to find out that it’s free event, mainly organised by Denbighshire Council. Credit where credit is due to Denbighshire Council; a great event and a great way to get people into the town. Credit should also go to the Council as I’m sure in light of the tragic events at Shoreham, they had to make some tough decisions about the airshow but they staged a well organised and safe event.
We parked up on a side street in Kinmel Bay and walked in, worried about traffic chaos, but getting into Rhyl in the car would have been fine, traffic was moving well and there were some dedicated car parks for the event. There was some queuing traffic on the way out, but it all moved surprisingly well considering there were up to 90,000 people in attendance (being stuck in a traffic jam for hours before or after an event is a huge bugbear of mine, it can properly take the shine off a good day when you’re all in close quarters, tired and stuck in a never ending sea of traffic).
Some proper goose bump moments under the bright azure skies and thundering engines, will definitely be attending again next year.
